These free resume writing tips will help you design an effective and winning resume. Your resume is the company’s first impression of you. A weak, bland, generic resume labels you one of the pack – nondescript and ordinary. Boring! These free resume writing tips will help improve your resume.

Whether you write a free resume yourself or have a professional service do it for you, you need to make sure it is effective. You need to make sure it is accurate, and that it has appropriate buzz words. A resume with strong action verbs, appropriate resume buzz words relevant to your industry, and specific accomplishments takes you above the crowd, and highlights your uniqueness and skills.

Here are our free resume writing tips. After the tips we will go over resources that can help you write a free resume.

Free resume writing tips

  • Decide on the format, chronological or functional. Employers prefer chronological resumes. Use a functional resume if your jobs and titles were similar, but in different companies. The chronological format would be too repetitive, in that case.
  • Do not crowd everything on one page. Two pages are fine.
  • Do not have more than a two-page resume. Don’t be too verbose. Your listener will get tired of listening to you.
  • Use no “cutesy” formats or terms, or you will lose credibility rather than achieve it.
  • Do not try to embellish the resume with fancy type, or black “picture frame” borders. Fancied-up resumes make the reader wonder if the applicant is trying to overcome a lack of content.
  • Make sure the content is relevant and enticing. It needs to be about you, your performance and accomplishments. Don’t just list your jobs and what you did. (See the free resume help section below for additional resources)
  • Space your sections, and items within each section. A resume must have visible pauses, so the reader can absorb what he reads before moving on. (See the free resume help section below for additional resources)
  • Do not include a personal section. That information is just that – personal – and has no place in a resume.
  • If you are still employed, do not use your current company’s email, envelopes, stationery, or mailing machine. Do not list your present company’s phone number on the resume or in the cover letter. It is very unprofessional to seek another job with tools from your current one.
  • Do not include references on the resume. This can go on a separate page.
  • Do not put salary on the resume. This goes on the cover letter.
  • With entry-level resumes, put your education first. Then list work experience.
  • FIND THE ERRORS. (Bad format, typos, no phone number, misplaced dates and company names, bad bullet margins, etc.). Any of these can cost you an interview.

These free resume writing tips can help make the difference in getting an interview. Whether you write a free resume yourself or hire a professional, you need to keep these tips in mind.
